Spokane needs clean, safe, and all-electric homes and buildings
Gas-powered buildings are a bad idea: for our health, our air, and the climate.
When we hook up buildings to fossil gas, we put our public health at risk and we fail to take necessary climate action.
Burning gas in buildings is a major contributor to climate pollution in Spokane, and the fastest-growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the state. To tackle the climate crisis, we must build without fossil fuels.
Buildings are also the primary source of pollution-related deaths in Washington state, because fossil gas also increases indoor and outdoor air pollution. Gas stoves and ovens emit harmful pollutants that compromise indoor air quality. Living in a home with gas cooking increases a child’s chance of developing asthma symptoms by 42%.
These public health risks disproportionately impact vulnerable and historically disadvantaged populations. And the COVID-19 pandemic only increases these impacts – exposure to air pollution leads to a higher COVID-19 death rate.
Sign now to let Spokane City Council know that we need clean, safe, all-electric buildings in Spokane to protect our health and safety.
Unfortunately, the gas industry and its allies are already fighting to take away the City’s ability to protect the Spokane community from the dangers of gas. Spokane City Council needs to stand strong against the gas industry’s greenwashing attempts by passing robust policies to transition off fossil fuels.
It’s time to build for the clean energy future...not the fossil-fueled past.
