We all deserve to breathe clean air

Most folks spend most of their time inside buildings. Whether it's hot or cold outside, staying comfortable indoors is essential. Yet a lot of our appliances that keep us warm can burn dirty fuels like gas, which warms the planet, too. And, when it’s hot out, conventional air conditioners are inefficient and use a lot of energy to operate.

There's a better way! An electric heat pump is a single appliance that replaces a furnace AND an air conditioner, uses less electricity for heating and cooling — saving you money on utility bills. Plus when there's dirty or smoky air outside along with hotter temperatures, with an electric heat pump you can keep your windows closed and still stay cool. It's great technology available now, but it needs to be attainable and affordable for everyone.

Subject: We need climate investments in whole-home retrofits and heat pumps

Message:

I don’t like living in a home with gas appliances, and want to transition them to clean electricity. I am writing to you as my legislator to help make it easier for my family and other families, especially lower income households, to make the transition. I recently learned that when appliances use gas instead of electricity, they cause indoor air pollution — putting children at risk for asthma — and emit more climate pollution. And, with hotter summers recently, I need cooling for the first time in my life. As you know, climate pollution from our buildings is growing at a faster rate than any other sector. To achieve our climate goals, we must use our clean grid to electrify our buildings. Existing buildings produce the vast majority of carbon emissions and using fossil gas for heating produces toxic indoor air pollution. It is critical we provide incentives to retrofit and electrify our homes and buildings. With the passage of the Climate Commitment Act, our state has new tools and a new revenue stream to make this possible. I am writing to you to make sure the Legislature invests Climate Commitment Act dollars wisely and well to meet the demands of the climate crisis and help all families to afford to move to efficient all-electric appliances. Please make the following programs funding priorities: • Low-and moderate-income heat pump program ($130 million) • Rebate program for heat pumps in schools and small businesses ($70 million) And to ensure that communities understand these new programs, please support HB 1391, to create a statewide "Navigator" to help connect residents with federal, state, utility, and community incentives that can make energy efficiency and electrification upgrades more affordable. Everyone deserves a healthy and safe home free from air-and climate-polluting methane gas. We all deserve homes that can stay cool and comfortable during extreme heat waves and wildfire smoke. One way to address the climate crisis and improve our quality of living is to ensure access to heat pumps and retrofits for all. Our Legislature has the opportunity to make unprecedented investments in climate solutions that can equitably accelerate our clean energy transition for all communities and families.
